Flugwerks FW 190: The Ultimate Kitset aircraft
The Flugwerks FW 190 is a scale replica of the original. Classified as a kitset aircraft it doesn’t attract the same level of Insurance premium as a vintage FW 190 would and with a price tag of around 750000 euro’s perhaps half the cost. It comes ready to assemble but without instrumentation and radios.
These are things you must provide yourself or pay Flugwerks to provide for you. This is an exact replica of the Focke Wulf FW 190 dimensionally, however internally there are differences.
The Flugwerks FW 190 Engine
The engine is an Ash-82 a Wright cyclone clone, a Russian Radial engine similar in size to the BMW power plant used in the FW190. Arkadiy Shvetsov developed the Wright Cyclone design, reducing the stroke, dimensions and weight. This allowed the engine to be used in light aircraft, where a “Twin Cyclone” could not be installed. It entered production in 1940 and saw service in a number of Soviet aircraft. It powered the Tupolev Tu-2 and Pe-8 bombers and the inline engine-powered LaGG-3 was adapted for the ASh-82, additionally the famous Lavochkin La-5, Lavochkin La-7 fighters, and the Ilyushin Il-14 airliner were created around the engine. Over 70,000 ASh-82s were built.
Flugwerks is also manufacturing a version of the Fw 190D model using a modified Allison V1710 engine instead of the Junkers Jumo 213 inverted V12 motor used by the original. This aircraft has a modified fuselage and longer span wings to enable it to perform at higher altitudes then the radial engined versions.
The Flugwerks FW 190 Variations
The Flugwerks FW 190 is unarmed and unarmoured, and the oil cooler was moved to where the 13mm machine guns were located to aid in cooling as the replica suffered in the same way the original did, from overheating. The replica is an exact copy of the original using many of the wartime jigs created to build the original aircraft. Parts from the Flugwerks FW 190 will fit into the wartime manufactured FW 190’s.
This has got to be the ultimate expression of the love of WW2 aviation, to build a flying replica of a major WW2 fighter aircraft. This expression is not cheap, at around 550000 to 750000 Euros depending on what you’re buying from FLugwerks. This is something I hope to achieve in the future.
In the meantime I have to be content just to build small scale plastic models of the FW190.

Does this company still exist? I would like to buy one new if I ever get big enough land.
Yes Flugwerk is still going they’re branching out into the P-51. I’d love to get my hands on one of the Fw190-D’s they built. But that’ll have to wait till I have the available space and I’m independently wealthy. LOL
